Seven mistakes that turn a high-stakes 1:1 into a postage stamp

“I 4kChat because I have a business that needs to be shown — not reduced to a postage-stamp tile.”

Most bad calls are not bad luck. They are the same handful of avoidable habits, each one shrinking you a little further into the tile. Here are the seven we see most, with the fix for each.

1.Letting the other side watch on a tiny laptop window

You can deliver a beautiful picture and still land as a thumbnail if your guest watches you in a small window next to their inbox. Fix: suggest the big screen ahead of time — cast or mirror from the browser, no Smart TV app needed. See Pitch on a 4K TV.

2.Sitting in front of a window

Backlight exposes for the bright background and turns your face into a silhouette. No camera or codec recovers a face that was never captured. Fix: turn around, face the window or a soft lamp, and run the 60-second check in the lighting guide.

3.Calling from a busy or noisy network

Video is uploaded, and your uplink is shared with everything else in the building. A cloud backup or a 4K stream elsewhere in the house will shave your quality in real time. Fix: wire in if you can, sit near the router if you cannot, and pause the big downloads for the hour.

4.Showing the product out of frame — or as a share-of-a-share

Waving the object at arm's length makes it a smudge; screen-sharing a window of your camera re-encodes an already-encoded picture and mush is the result. Fix: bring it close, hold it still, light it from the front — or add a phone as a second camera angle. See Show the object.

    5.Expecting guaranteed 4K

Resolution follows your hardware and the network between you and the other side — it is not a switch and it is not guaranteed on any call. Fix: test on the real network with the real devices before the real call, and optimize what you control: light, framing, uplink. The gear checklist walks it.

6.Forgetting the waiting room — or admitting late

Without the waiting room, guests drop in mid-setup; with it, a guest left waiting five minutes wonders if the link is broken. Fix: the waiting room is on by default — join your own room a few minutes early, get composed, then admit promptly. See Waiting room for investor calls.

7.Running Free on a hard-NAT network without testing

4K Chat is direct peer-to-peer, and Free has no TURN relay. Most networks connect fine; some strict corporate or symmetric-NAT networks do not. Fix: if the call matters, test from the actual location first — a two-minute test call tells you everything. If your network is the strict kind, plan for that before the investor is waiting.
